What We Do

Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries Limited (KSAIL) is a leading integrated sugar manufacturing company in Kenya, incorporated in September 1999 and strategically located approximately 10 kilometers east of Kisumu City in the Lake Victoria Basin.

The company commissioned its modern greenfield sugar factory in 2007 with an installed crushing capacity of 4,000 tons of cane per day (TCD), enabling the processing of approximately 480,000 tons of sugarcane annually. KSAIL works closely with both small-scale and large-scale farmers across the former Miwani Sugar Factory zone, parts of Kisumu and Nandi counties, as well as other regions in Western Kenya and the Rift Valley.

KSAIL produces high-quality white and brown sugar marketed under the trusted Star Sugar brand. In addition to sugar production, the company utilizes by-products from the milling process including bagasse, molasses, filter mud, and fly ash to support sustainable industrial operations and environmental conservation.

As part of its commitment to sustainable energy solutions, KSAIL cogenerates electricity from bagasse, a renewable by-product of sugarcane processing, currently producing 3 MW of power for internal consumption.

The company also operates a nucleus estate spanning over 5,000 hectares alongside a strong network of out growers cultivating sugarcane on approximately 100,000 hectares across Nyanza, Western, and Rift Valley regions.

Driven by innovation, sustainability, and strong partnerships with farmers and communities, KSAIL continues to play a significant role in Kenya’s agro-industrial growth and economic development.

Sustainable Growth

A Legacy of Great Taste

A Journey of Sweetness, Growth, and Excellence

From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition

At Kibos Sugar, our journey began with a simple vision — to deliver the natural goodness of quality sugar while creating sustainable value for communities, farmers, and industries across the region.

Founded in Kibos county in Kisumu, Kenya, the company has steadily grown from modest beginnings into one of the country’s recognized integrated sugar manufacturers. Through dedication, innovation, and a commitment to excellence, Kibos Sugar has become a trusted household name cherished nationwide.

Growth Driven by Innovation

Within just five years of operations, Kibos Sugar significantly expanded its production capabilities, increasing its sugar crushing capacity to 3,500 Tons of Cane per Day (TCD). In line with our commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, the company also enhanced its co-generation power capacity by an additional 15MW, bringing the total generation capacity to 18MW.

A major milestone in our journey was the commissioning of the 100-ton boiler on 29th December 2014. Designed to produce steam at 45 kg/cm² pressure and 440°C temperature, the facility supports the generation of up to 15MW of electricity, reinforcing our position as a forward-thinking and energy-conscious enterprise.

Sustainability and Value Addition

At Kibos Sugar, we believe in maximizing the value of every resource. Our by-products, including molasses, ethanol, and organic fertilizer, serve as essential raw materials for a range of high-value industries and products.

Driven by our vision for sustainable industrial growth, the company is also expanding into paper and packaging manufacturing through Kibos Paper and Packaging Limited. This venture utilizes excess bagasse generated from the co-generation plant to support the establishment of a 100 Tons Per Day Pulp and Paper Mill adjacent to the sugar factory.

With common shareholders and directors, Kibos Paper and Packaging Limited reflects our long-term commitment to environmental responsibility, resource optimization, and industrial diversification.

Building a Sustainable Future

Today, Kibos Sugar continues to grow with a strong focus on innovation, operational excellence, and sustainable development. Our journey is guided by a commitment to empowering farmers, supporting communities, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to the nation’s industrial and economic progress.

As we look ahead, we remain dedicated to delivering quality products while shaping a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.

WEIGHBRIDGES

At KSAIL, our goal is to produce sugar efficiently and sustainably below COMESA import parity prices, ensuring strong competitiveness within the COMESA market. We aim to be Kenya’s lowest-cost sugar producer, capable of supplying both local and regional markets without reliance on protection, while driving long-term growth and sustainability..

The sugar factory directly employs over 1,000 staff and supports more than 20,000 cane farmers and workers in the supply chain. Through strong backward and forward linkages, the company contributes to the livelihoods of over 100,000 people, driving meaningful socio-economic impact in the region.

KSAIL operates Ten cane collection weighbridges—four in Kisumu, three in Nandi County, two in Kericho County and one in Kakamega County. These facilities streamline cane delivery from farmers to the factory, with transport costs ending at the weighbridges. Collectively, they handle over 3,500 tons of cane daily, ensuring efficient and timely supply to the mill.
